Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often, and a few that could save you a phone call.

What’s the difference between an insurance broker and going directly to an insurance company?+

A broker like me isn’t tied to one insurer. I compare coverage and pricing across multiple carriers, including top carriers like Aviva, Intact, and CAA, to find the best fit for you. It’s a convenient approach: you deal with the same person no matter how many times you call, and you’re never forced to stay with the same company at renewal or left to shop around on your own. That’s what my team and I take care of.

Does using a broker cost me more?+

No. Brokers are typically paid a commission by the insurer, not a fee added on top of your premium. You get comparison shopping and advocacy at no extra cost.

Why did my premium go up at renewal even though I didn’t make a claim?+

Rates can rise due to factors outside your control, including claims trends in your area, vehicle or home replacement costs, or insurer-wide rate filings. At renewal, I review your policy and remarket it if a better rate is available elsewhere.

What should I do first if I need to file a claim?+

Contact me before or immediately after reporting to the insurer. I can walk you through the process, make sure you’re not missing anything, and advocate on your behalf if the claim gets complicated.

Can I bundle my home and auto insurance, and will it actually save me money?+

In most cases, yes. Bundling with the same carrier often reduces your overall premium and simplifies renewals. I can review your current policies and tell you exactly what you’d save.

How much coverage do I actually need?+

It depends on your assets, liability exposure, and risk tolerance; there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. I do a full needs review before recommending coverage limits, rather than just matching your old policy.

What happens to my existing policy if I switch to you as my broker?+

I can usually take over servicing your existing policy without a lapse in coverage, then review it at your next renewal (or sooner, if it makes sense) to see if a better option exists.

How long does it take to get a quote?+

Most personal line quotes are ready within an hour. Commercial lines can take up to 24 hours, depending on carrier response times and how quickly we have your information.

What information do you need from me to get an accurate quote?+

For personal lines: your driver’s license, vehicle or home details, and your current policy, if you have one. For commercial lines, it depends on the type of business; we’ll need detailed information to properly match coverage to your risk exposure.

Do you work with businesses of all sizes, or specific industries?+

I work with businesses of all sizes, including contractors (HVAC, plumbing, construction, electrical, handyman, painting), business owners with multiple vehicles, investors with multiple properties, and manufacturing units, anywhere in Ontario.
